Hypothyroidism = Gluten-free?

Hi all!

I apologize that it’s been awhile. I’m in the midst of changing my blog over to a new platform/name/brand/etc. (yay!) so I’ve been trying to back off of this one until I have that all figured out. I’ll let you all in on that soon, though! Promise.🙂

Question for anyone out there reading this, though. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about three years ago and have been struggling with it ever since. My medication seems to keep it “under control” but I still have a tough time with losing weight, fogginess and tiredness. I chalked it up to “things I’ll have to live with” for the rest of my life.

Well, after having a trying couple of months, but my thyroid technically not getting any higher (so no higher dosage of meds), I decided to Google a bit today to see if there’s anything else I can do to supplement my Levothyroxin. (<— I probably spelled that wrong.) I was reading up and saw that some people suggest going gluten- free. Does anyone know anything about this?

Going gluten-free seems like a pretty big undertaking (and not something I necessarily WANT to do unless it’ll help me out) so I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on 1) If you’ve also heard that going gluten-free can help hypothyroidism or 2) Gluten-free tips/tricks/blogs/etc. Of course, I’m planning on talking with my doctor, but I don’t have an appointment with her until the end of this month.

Let me know in the comments or shoot me an email (thehealthyspread at gmail dot com), please! And I’ll keep you in the loop about the blog changes coming soon!

And, since there are no photos in this blog and I hate that, here’s a Insta picture of my pretty holiday decorations. :)

My “Me Day”

Time for my first link up for Treat Yourself Tuesday!

Today was a special day for me. I took a half day off of work to celebrate myself. It sounds kind of weird, but basically one year ago to the day I changed my life completely for the better. Ended a long-term relationship that wasn’t working and got ready to find myself. It’s been a hard year (mostly financially) but it’s been fantastic. So today was all about celebrating! (So, if you’re in a bad mood, leave me alone. :P)

Don’t mind the silly face.🙂

I started the day off early at work and then left at noon to start my “me day”. Then I went to a local nail salon called Polished where I got a pedicure AND a shellac manicure. I’ve never had either and it was awesome!

I spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing and watching TV before heading to the hair stylist to get a much needed cut. I’m spending the rest of the night eating a lot of chocolate and refusing to read work email. REFUSING!

This is a fun idea! I didn’t do too much the past couple of weeks because I was saving up for today (and trust me, I don’t have enough money to get manicures/pedicures/haircuts EVER), but I’d like to start taking some more me time. Even if it’s just taking a walk or taking a fun workout class … just more time for me.

Here’s to another Treat Yourself Tuesday and to many more years of continuing to better myself.🙂 I like this “Me Day” anniversary!

Thanks for the link up, Becky!

Busy Month and Jedi Mind Tricks

I know, I know. It’s been awhile AGAIN. I keep telling myself I’ll blog more when I think of a new blog name, but I can’t think of a name! Excuses, excuses.

Anyways, the past couple of weeks have been insane. Ok, all of October was insane. I wasn’t in the office for a full week because I had so much to do! Two photo shoots, conferences, client meetings and one day off.🙂

So a couple of weekends ago, my love from the east coast came to visit and somehow conned me into going to St. Norbert’s homecoming. #toooldforthat

image_2 image_3 image_4

We went from Milwaukee to Port Washington to DePere to Madison then back to Milwaukee in two days. WHEW. Totally worth it to be with Amy again, though. Love her!

image_6So the next weekend I was back up in DePere for my wonderful friend Nichole’s wedding. I got to hang out with some awesome ladies (and a couple gentlemen). It was SUCH a fun wedding and it was great to see so many of my college loves again.

Bathroom selfies – expect anything else?

Stealing people’s sunglasses…

Then, my body decided it was done with this “let’s be healthy” crap and I came down with a cold. Of course it happened right when I needed to go to Chicago for a two-day seminar for work.

Luckily my hotel room on the first night ended up being spectacular, so I stayed in, ordered room service and slept in my king bed. I’m telling you, I may be a tiny little thing, but I’m pretty sure I need a king bed.

image_13 image_14 image_15 image_12

Beautiful views. I’m still not sure how I lucked out with this hotel room, but I’m not askin’ any questions.🙂

Once I got back to Milwaukee, I spent the rest of the week catching up at work and getting myself back to being healthy.

This past Friday night was my favorite night ever. I left work right at 5 (not normal) and spent the night watching tv, reading blogs and catching up on my YouTube subscriptions. Then I slept until noon on Saturday and watched the final season of Gossip Girl because I’m awesome like that.

Somehow, Gina convinced me to go out for Halloween. You probably don’t know this, but I really, really don’t like Halloween. Mostly because I’m a scaredy cat AND because I’ve always hated dressing up for things. For example, at all of our themed dances in college, I always wore a pretty dress and just told everyone to f- off basically because I wanted to be pretty. HA. I can be such a diva.

ANYWAY, Gina used her jedi mind tricks on me and gave me her skittles costume and I hated myself dressed up and went out. It ended up being really fun! We went to a bar called Victors (lovingly called “Victims” by Milwaukeeans, haha) and then headed back to a bar closer to my apartment where I spent most of the night convincing a guy to talk to me in an Irish accent. Ohhhhh, life.

I don’t drink very often though so I had a little too much and ended up spending all of today laying around like a pile of crap. I’m getting old.

So, that’s what’s been happening! What’s new in your life? And, as always, let me know in the comments or send me an email if you have any super secret ways to come up with a new blog name. I’m just not lovin’ The Healthy Spread anymore.

A weekend up north

This past weekend I went up to my hometown for some much needed “away from Milwaukee” time and to get my car fixed. It’s beautiful up there – I miss watching the trees changes. I don’t miss what comes AFTER autumn, though. (Snow/cold/gross)

Let’s just pretend that doesn’t happen.

Anyways, I got to see my best friend who I haven’t seen since April – yay!

Michelle + Jessie = Awesome. We went to a couple of bars in my hometown (which was interesting – I’ve actually never gone out there. Weird.)

We had a photo bomber …

Then she and I stayed up talking until almost 4:30 a.m. Needless to say, I was tired as hell Saturday but it was totally worth it.

I went with my mom to get a new iPhone – she’s a new Apple convert! She got a blue iPhone 5C. I then stole her phone and put all kinds of fun photos and ringtones on it just to bug her.🙂 Fun Fact: Don’t show your mom the poop emoji because she will send it to every. single. person. she knows with an iPhone.

Then Sunday we went grocery shopping so I have food (Thanks, Mom!)

I almost died laughing when I watched a lady cross the street in her motorized wheelchair, though.

So that was my weekend! I started the Holiday Hustle today from Janetha’s blog and so far it’s going well! Then again, I’m only 4 hours in, but still. I’m loving Spark! It’s kept me awake all morning and I was even in a good mood this morning (what?!) We’ll see how I’m feeling around 3 p.m. when I usually reach for my daily soda.

Have any of you tried the Advocare 24-day Challenge? I’ve never felt like it was necessary, but when Janetha put a contest around it, I couldn’t say no.🙂

Liebster Award Fun

You know I love me a good questionnaire. Well, Anna @  A Dash of Quirky was nice enough to tag anyone in the Liebster Awards on her blog (an award for upcoming bloggers)  so… I’m doin’ it.😉

**Here are some details**

  1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
  2. Answer the questions that the nominator set for you plus create 11 questions for the people you’ve nominated to answer.
  3. Choose 11 people and link them in your post (Sorry, guys. I’m only doin’ 3!)

So, here are 11 random facts about me!

1) I’m short. Like REALLY short. 5’1″ to be exact. And you know what? I LOVE IT.
2) My favorite animal in the entire world is a golden retriever. One of the many reasons I love Back East Blonde. Besides her HP obsession, of course!
3) Speaking of HP, I’m a H-U-G-E Harry Potter nerd. Huge.
4) I’m afraid of the dark. Seriously! It’s embarrassing.
5) I would move to California in a heartbeat if given the opportunity.
6) I absolutely have to visit Ireland at least once in my lifetime. I wouldn’t mind a nice Irish man, either.😉
7) I’m starting the Holiday Hustle next week and I’m really excited!
8) My favorite color is red, though almost everything I own is pink.
9) I was in pageants. Granted, they were northern Wisconsin pageants, but whatevs.
10) I made the Packers cheerleading team (technically St. Norbert’s squad but they cheer for the Packers) and I quit because my coach was insane and I didn’t have time for the practices. Probably my second biggest regret in college (my first was not studying abroad in Ireland) because she never let me re-tryout.😦
11) I work two jobs – one at an advertising agency that I love and a part-time job as a leasing agent at an apartment complex.

And here are the questions that Anna asked!

1. If you could trade spots with just one person for a day, who would it be?
Hmm, this is hard! Maybe someone that works at Twitter because I’ve always wondered what it would be like to work there and live in San Francisco.🙂 OR Twitter Dublin … and just listen to everyone talk, ha.

2. What are you happiest with in your life right now?
I think I’m happiest with my attitude on life right now. I had gotten in quite a bad rut last year with being kind of negative, unmotivated and lonely. I’ve taken some time to turn my life around this year when it comes to my work, my blog and just me! So I’d say I’m happiest about that.

3. Name a household chore you like, and one you can’t stand.
A chore I like? What? You can like chores? Um … I suppose don’t HATE laundry. One I can’t stand is vacuuming. I’ve always hated it. Luckily my apartment is super small so it doesn’t take long to vacuum.

4. Do you have a middle name?  Any meaning behind it?
Yep, it’s Suzanne and it’s my mom’s name!

5. What’s your favorite beverage?
Honestly? I really love soda. I wish I didn’t. It’s a horrible addiction!

6. Name one thing you’d never try and why.
I would never try skydiving. Nope. It’s a hard enough to get me IN a plane, let alone make me jump out.

7. If you could have one thing you’ve seen on Pinterest what would you pick?
Basically the entire clothing board that I have. I hate all of my clothes, ha. Oh, and this watch that Steph has. Love it!

8.  Favorite song or album of all time.  Go.
Oooooh, that’s hard! Basically all of the Backstreet Boys albums. I know, I know. I’m a loser. DON’T CARE!

9.  You get one question for one person.  Anyone.  Who is it, and what would you ask?
Aaron Rodgers. Q: “Will you marry me?” and he’ll OBVIOUSLY say yes and we’ll live happily ever after.  BUT if he says no, then I’ll ask Clay the same thing.

though if A-Rod wants to marry me, he’ll have to get rid of the weird mustache he has in that gif.

10. One fashion trend you love and one you don’t.

Love: I’m not good at following rules, so I picked more than one. Scarves, boots, anything girly, etc.
cfcdde2a7dda6699716403144a0c34d16bca18c4bb5db30e1f5f52820f96cd6fb6caef01b58c310b6f9325d707833e7eHate: Uggs. I don’t know why, I just can’t stand them!

11. Tell us one thing you want to try someday!
I’ve always wanted to live in California. Does that count? I’d love to try to do that some day, but I’m too practical right now to just drop everything and go there without a plan.

And that’s all, folks!

I’m tagging these three ladies if they’re up for it!
Kate @ Daily Cup of Kate
Chelsey @ Beatles, Barbells and Baseball
Kim @ My Healthy Nest

My Questions:
1) What would your “last meal” be? It can be as many courses as you’d like!
2) Best book you’ve read recently.
3) What is your favorite and least favorite workout?
4) What is one song you’re absolutely loving right now?
5) If you could meet one person (alive or dead) tomorrow, who would it be and where would you meet them?
6) Which blog do you read religiously and rarely (if ever) skip over?
7) What is your go-to store for clothes shopping?
8) If you could move anywhere in the world right now, where would you move and why?
9) What is your favorite animal?
10) What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
11) Finish this sentence: “If you want to spoil me rotten, get me…?”

A beautiful view

Whew, I’m exhausted! I helped run my first photo shoot for work today and I could fall asleep now (mind you, it’s not even 8 p.m. yet).

Lucky for me, the scenery was beautiful up at the shoot location today. It made for a wonderful day! It helped that it was 80+ degrees, too. Stay away, winter.

photo_1 photo_2 photo_3 photo

I could take pictures of that view all day! So gorgeous.

Now I’m off to get some stuff done before bed and *hopefully* get up and go to the gym tomorrow. I’m not very good at getting up early, so I’m guessing it won’t happen. Any tips on getting up early when you are ALWAYS tired? I swear, I get 8+ hours of sleep and I still can’t get up.

Happy October 1!
